Celebrating History and Heritage
in the Anthracite Coal Region
Situated in the heart of Pennsylvania’s famous Anthracite Region is the city of Shamokin and environs–or the Greater Shamokin Area. With coal as her heritage, Shamokin lays claim to a rich and varied history of industry and commerce, enterprising leaders and industrious workers. Preserving and celebrating this heritage is the mission of the Greater Shamokin Heritage Museum, maintained by the Northumberland County Council for the Arts and Humanities.
The Heritage Museum holds thousands of items including historic photographs, artifacts, memorabilia, and archival material covering approximately 150 years of history in the Greater Shamokin Area.
In addition to the museum, the Northumberland County Council for the Arts and Humanities organizes the annual Anthracite Heritage Festival and maintains the Art Gallery and the Kallaway Center.
